Supernatural Senses

Angels are primarily creatures of Essence, and their senses are more attuned to its flow than those of humans. The Seraphim have the same sensory abilities as Gifted humans. Also, angels can see straight into the soul of most people, getting a sense of the person’s personality, goals, shortcomings, and virtues. This is not mind reading, but simply a clear impression of what kind of people face them. Only barriers that block the flow Essence (like the Shielding Invocation) block these senses. If the Seraphim spends several seconds (a game Turn) looking at a person, he can see into the target’s Essence Matrix by passing a Simple Perception Test. Mundanes cannot resist this viewing. Gifted and Supernatural characters resist with a Simple Willpower Test, with a -2 penalty. Illusions resist with the Task used in creating the Illusion, also at a -2 penalty. The Seraphim can also see into much higher and lower spectrums of light and energy than humans. They possess the equivalent of infrared vision, which lets them see heat, including that generated by living beings even in complete darkness.

Warning

Earth bound Angels possess great power but must exist by a set of unofficial rules and regulations in an effort to avoid being hunted by the Archangels or Angel Hunters. They are as follows:

  1. While they possess incredible powers and abilities most of those abilities are fueled by Essence. Unfortunately for Angels the act of burning Essence stands out like a beacon to Hunters and Archangels. The more essence burned the brighter the beacon. Spending a little here and there will likely go unnoticed but Angels must be careful not to become too relaxed with their abilities.

  2. The Providence ability is incredibly powerful. Unfortunately aside from requiring massive amounts of Essence to fuel, which stands out as described above, the act of manipulating the threads of fate so directly stands out like a blaring horn to any Hunter or Archangel nearby. Using the Providence ability will almost assuredly attract unwanted attention.

With the end of the Ancient Era of mankind the Old Gods were replaced by The One God of Christianity. While no one is entirely sure why nearly all of the gods of the Old World vanished more or less at the same time. Where the Old Gods were very active in the lives of their worshipers this new god took a more hands off approach. His will still needed to be imposed, however, and this is where the Angels came in. They were the Deity’s messengers and agents, and they carried the Word, and often the Wrath, of God, the Metatron.

Not all of the Angels were content to simply be shepherds of humanity, however. Lucifer, a favored Archangel of the One God, despised the fact that humanity was given free will but Angels existed as little more than divine slaves. Lucifer decided to rebel and he brought fully half of the Angels in heaven with him.

Lucifer would eventually lose The War in Heaven and be cast out into Hell(many believe this is the same Hell ruled over by Hades, or at least is connected to it in some way). The Angels that sided with Lucifer were given an opportunity to return to Heaven, their sins forgiven. Surprisingly very few took the Archangels up on this offer having grown too accustomed to their own free will. And so it became that the Angels of Heaven became divided into Divine and Infernal(often referred to as Demons). All who refused to accept the mercy of the Archangels were cast down into Hell with Lucifer, an event that would become known as The Falling.

The differences between the Divine and Infernal Seraphim are largely philosophical and cosmetic. Even after Falling, the demons retain all their former powers. For example, they can wield the Celestial Fire, but its energies are twisted and blackened with hatred and rage, turning it into Hellfire. They have a Divine and Profane form, but the former is often monstrous (the exceptions almost outnumber the rule, however—many Seraphim are too vain to adopt hideous visages). Their Divine form can grow wings, but for the most part these are leathery constructs, more like bat-wings than bird wings. Many demons now favor Incarnations which combine flesh with leather, plastic, and metal piercing, imitating human culture.

In modern times Earth has become a refuge for both Angels and Demons. Heaven is in utter disarray having never fully recovered from the great Rebellion of Lucifer and Hell is, well, it’s Hell. While escape to Earth is against the laws of Heaven(for both Angels and Demons) it doesn’t stop them from doing it. They simply need to be careful to not attract the attention of the Archangels or Angel Hunters.

With the Awakening of Leviathan the Archangel Michel (the female form of the Archangel once known as Michael) has broken away from Heaven in an attempt to unite not only Angels and Demons but humans and demigods against the impending threat of the dark god. This doesn’t necessarily sit well with the other Archangels but given Michel’s power and reputation none have stepped up to challenge her yet.
